Not sure Turkey qualifies as more enlightened overall these days given their own struggles with human rights, etc. Thank goodness for the lovely individuals living among us in all of the world's cultures to keep redirecting us all towards more humane and thoughtful living. Well I think there's a big difference between the political and the personal in a country. When I told people I was going to Mexico, many of them seemed to think the whole place was patrolled by cartel guys with AKs. Not that there's not trouble there, but it's like judging what America is like from Chicago crime news or White House press briefings. And I find that even traveling around the USA, there's a huge gap between what we're told the country is like and all the complex facets of what it's really like, and I would expect the same is true for Turkey. But I guess I'll have to go find out for myself!
