I’ve been thinking lately about my growing circle of friends and family, my framily if you will, which is so spread out across the world. If you’re reading this and we’ve never talked, it’s likely that you’re just a part of my framily I haven’t met yet, so please consider yourself included. While I’ve really been enjoying visiting people over the last two years and spending a few days or a week or two hanging out, I often wish y’all could be in one place. Not just to make it easier for me, but also because you’re such wonderful people and I’d love it if y’all could meet each other. Of course, when I die my funeral would be a good venue for that, but I really don’t want to miss out on the fun!
So I had this crazy idea to stay in one place for a little while and invite everyone to join me there. And then I thought maybe this wasn’t such a crazy idea, and that’s how I wound up renting a big house in Mexico for seven weeks. So consider yourself invited to come hang out in the sun and do some cooking, eating, talking, hiking, and swimming. The location will be the little town of Tepoztlán, which is south of Mexico City, easily accessible from the airport, laid back, diversely populated, near ancient structures and natural areas, and with great food and culture. The date range will be from January 18th to March 8th 2023. The house can accommodate 10 people including me1, so if there’s a lot of interest concentrated on particular days, we might need to figure out how to put extra people in nearby lodgings. There’s an open air market within walking distance, and I plan to do a lot of cooking, but you should be aware that this is a seat-of-the-pants operation that I haven’t fully figured out yet, and I’m hoping that making it work will turn into a group effort2.
So, if you’re thinking of coming, please let me know and I’ll make an email list for sending out more details and coordinating and such. If you’re getting this in your inbox, you can just reply to the email and I’ll get it. Otherwise just send an email to jesse.crossen@gmail.com . Unfortunately I know not everyone can drop everything and head to Mexico, but it’s the first idea I had, and if it works out then hopefully I can make it happen again at another time and place. I’m looking forward to seeing you there, or wherever else we happen to meet again!
There are 3 bedrooms with 8 beds and 3 bathrooms. I may be sleeping in a hammock or on the ground in any case, and I know at least a few of you also like to do things like that. We’ll make it work.
I already recruited my mom on the house search, and she’s the one who found this place. Thanks Mom!
This is the nicest thing I read for a long time, Jesse.
What a great initiative. I would love to come but I will see if I can make it. I know this sounds funny but it depends if I can find a cat sitter for my little grey feline Trotzky again.
I'm on the wait list to go to New Zealand with Linblad during that time ( the expedition company my sister works for) but if I don't get on I'm in! Sounds incredible and what a brilliant idea!
